FAQ

What has to be considered before recording at Quadrophonia Studio?

We recommend bassists and guitarists to bring several sets of strings, preferably two sets of the respective brand and size. It is however recommendable to keep your usual strings in order to use them for recording the pilot tracks which are only used as an orientation for the drummer and will later be deleted. Like this, your strings remain “fresh” for a longer period.

We also ask you to complete our “recording plan“ and indicate all your songs. It allows us to keep track of what has already been recorded and which song we are talking about. It also enables us to work systematically without losing sight of anything. You can download it here.

Recording? Mixing? Mastering?

These terms represent the three main parts of recording: Recording means recording the music, each instrument, cymbal or voice as an independent track. This being finished, it’s time for mixing which is about combining all tracks, adjusting the volume of vocals, guitars and the level of instruments. The finished mix is then ready for mastering - the final tuning of the mix. It’s focussing on the song as a whole, we can no longer control the individual tracks and their loudness. It’s about making the tracks compatible with each other and creating a powerful mix. This also involves creating the loudness that is expected from professional CD productions. The final touches include arranging the individual songs and creating the CD text and pauses between the songs.

What does Editing mean?

Editing describes the editing of individual tracks after recording and before mixing: The tracks are cleared up – which means that the singer’s breath during pauses (even if it’s inaudible) or finger noises when playing guitar are eliminated. Like this, you’ll get a clear mix without any disturbing sounds. But more importantly, editing allows to correct inaccuracies such as a guitar playing too early, a wrong tune or adjusting different instruments and vocals. For us at Quadrophonia Studio, attention to detail is a must.
